Angoon is the center of a marine vortex. The crossing of currents from ocean into inland waters, combined with the tides flowing from long fjord-like bays, creates optimal conditions for marine life. Angoon means “Crossing Waters,” and the waters are alive.

Shorelines and tide pools of clams, mussels, urchins, and hundreds of marine creatures, all producing plankton, stretch out for hundreds of miles. The only sound is of shorebirds and waterfowl. Everything is alive.

Eagles always search overhead for the next opportunity. Herring boil on the surface, feeding on plankton. Masses of herring bring in the salmon and the porpoise, seal, and sea lions, all followed by a migrating pack of orca whales.
Humpback Whales reside in local waters feeding on the abundance of herring from May through September. This is the only area in the world where humpback whales collectively “bubble net” feed. Whale watching is an amazing wildlife encounter you will always remember.

Onshore we anchor at the mouth of a stream filled with spawning salmon. Walking upstream, we look ahead for bears chasing salmon in the shallows. We sit at the edge of tall sedge grass along the shore as bears feed on a year’s worth of nourishment during the three-month summer season. Bears always have the right of way.

Hike through the ecological chain of life from smallest to largest. We start on the beach and along tide pools, home of saltwater gardens of clams, chitans, urchins, and anemone. Walk up salmon spawning streams where rivers connect the land and the sea. Watch whole schools of salmon migrate back into their home waters. Eagles and ravens along the surrounding ancient forest are eager. Moving with the tide, we go back out, all eyes open for whale spouts ahead.

Canoe into a land that time forgot. Come to the home of the Teikweide, the Bear Clan. We paddle up Shaa-Heen or “mountain water” into the heart of Admiralty Island in an all day canoe adventure for spectacular scenery, amazing wildlife, and fantastic fishing.

Amazing fishing: Catch and Release.
Gathering or, as we say, “When the tide is out the table is set.”
Based on the tide, we gather clams, Dungeness crab, sea run trout during the morning. Your shore lunch or shore dinner will be freshly prepared "camp style" on a Coleman stove on a wilderness beach. Naturalist activities with a culinary purpose. We continue with afternoon fishing and wildlife viewing, your choice.
It’s all good, so each day you can choose the combination of fishing and wildlife viewing best for everyone in your party.
